Trying to figure this out just from specifications and documentation can be impossible. Checking for voltages with a multimeter with the device powered up.Checking continuity with a multimeter between points on the connector and points on the PCB.Power connections: these will often use wider traces and connect to large value capacitors, which connect to ground.Ground connections: these will often be connected to large areas of copper, sometimes with thermal relief (giving 4 short connections from the pin to the copper area).Pin 1 markings: dot or triangle in the silk screen, square pad for soldering.If you're making a cable to plug into a PCB connector, then you can usually orient yourself in a few ways: Really, you're not going to get this right without physical samples in your hands or a detailed drawing of the actual product and accessories. I would say the Molex numbering scheme is much more common than the Amphenol scheme here. This pin numbering is not the same as the Molex Mini-Fit part you reference in the post. Choose molex connector kits in 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, 12,15 pins. The "Drawing" PDF on the page tells you the locations of pin 1 and pin 2 relative to the key, looking down into the connector as it would be mounted on the board. Molex Connectors, 2-15 circuits are in-stock at Parts Express. ![]() Then you look at the mating part of the connector, which (I think) is: Relay manufactures evolved from a slightly different discipline and show the pin out looking at the bottom of the relay. PCB footprints are almost always shown looking top down at the part as it would be mounted. Compare to "common knowledge" or standards online. Mark which pins are drivers and which are receivers. Look at the drawing for each connector, make sure it's clear that the connections are shown looking from the top or bottom or looking into the connector or behind the connector, etc. I always sit down and draw this stuff out when reviewing a design. Ribbon cables can be assembled in four different ways for each connector. ![]() RS-232 serial ports can be a real nightmare. Even if the same plug is used on the both ends of a cable, if it is not wired symmetrically, then you need to make sure you don't reverse the connection ends. Once you go to a cable or wire harness all bets are off. Generally, there is a mating pair of connectors and their pin numbers are going to match, so that pin 1 on a PCB mounted jack is going make an electrical connection to pin 1 on a cable mounted plug. Connectors are a common source of error in a design.
